Connect your own AI tool to Hive with the Hive MCP server

Let Claude, Cursor, or your own AI agent read and update your Hive work through the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Written by Ellen Kajca

Hive has an MCP server. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI tool use the tools of another app. When you connect your AI tool to the Hive MCP server, the AI can read your Hive work and do work in Hive for you. For example, it can find actions, create actions, and update projects.

Note: This article is about connecting an AI tool to Hive. To let Buzz use other tools, see Connect apps, MCP servers, and APIs to Buzz.

Server details

Server URL

https://hive-mind.hive.com/mcp

Transport

Streamable HTTP

Authentication

OAuth (recommended), or your Hive API key in a request header

The AI uses your Hive account. It can see and change only the data that you can see and change in Hive.

Connect with OAuth (recommended)

Use OAuth if your AI tool can add a remote MCP server or a custom connector. Most current AI tools can, for example Claude and Cursor. You do not need an API key.

  1. In your AI tool, add a new remote MCP server or custom connector.

  2. Enter the server URL https://hive-mind.hive.com/mcp. Do not add an API key to the URL.

  3. When your AI tool asks you to sign in, sign in to Hive.

  4. Hive shows Connect this app to Hive? with the name of the app and its App destination. Make sure that you know the app and that you started this connection.

  5. Click Allow access.

After you allow access, the app can read your Hive data and create and change Hive data with your permissions. The app keeps this access, also when you are not using it. To stop the app from using Hive, remove the Hive connection from your AI tool.

Connect with an API key

Use an API key only if your AI tool or agent cannot use OAuth but can send custom request headers.

  1. In Hive, click your avatar and select My profile. Then select API info. If you do not have an API key yet, click Generate API Key. Click Copy API key.

  2. In your AI tool, add the server URL https://hive-mind.hive.com/mcp.

  3. Add this request header: api-key: <your Hive API key>

An example configuration for a tool that uses JSON:

{
"mcpServers": {
"hive": {
"url": "https://hive-mind.hive.com/mcp",
"headers": { "api-key": "YOUR_HIVE_API_KEY" }
}
}
}

Important: Your API key gives access to your Hive account. Keep it secret. Do not put it in the server URL, and do not share it in chat messages or files that other people can see. If someone else gets your key, regenerate it in API info. The old key then stops working.

For more about the Hive API, see Getting Started with the Hive API.

Use Hive from your AI tool

After you connect, your AI tool shows the Hive tools. Each tool has a name and a description, for example getProjects, getActions, insertActions, and updateActionsStatus. Ask your AI in plain language, for example:

  • "Show my overdue actions in Hive."

  • "Create an action in the Website Redesign project to review the homepage copy, due Friday."

  • "Summarize the status of my projects in Hive."

If you are in more than one Hive workspace, tell the AI which workspace to use.

Some tools are marked to show that they only read data. Finance tools that post entries to the ledger are marked as destructive. Many AI tools use these marks to decide when to ask you before they run a tool. Always check what your AI tool will change before you approve it.

Troubleshooting

Problem

Do this

Your AI tool shows an authentication error

Reconnect the Hive server in your AI tool and sign in again. If you use an API key, make sure that it is correct and is in the api-key header.

Your AI tool can connect only to local (stdio) MCP servers

The Hive MCP server is a remote server. Use an AI tool that supports remote MCP servers over HTTP, or use a local MCP proxy that connects to a remote server.

The AI says that it cannot get access to a project or workspace

Make sure that you can open the project in Hive with the same account. The AI has the same access as you.

You want to build an integration without AI

Use the Hive API. See the API reference.

Safety note: Connect Hive only to AI tools that your organization approves. Follow your company's security policies for outside integrations.
