Compare months year over year in chart widgets

Break a chart out by Year to compare the same months across different years.

Written by Ellen Kajca

Use a Year breakout to see how each month compares with the same month in other years. For example, compare how many actions were created each month in 2025 and 2026.

Set up a year-over-year chart

  1. Add a Bar chart or Line chart widget to a dashboard, or open an existing one.

  2. Under X Axis, choose a date field, such as Created date, Due date, or a date custom field.

  3. Set Bin by to Month.

  4. Choose a Date range that covers more than one year, such as Last 24 months.

  5. Under Break out by, choose Year. It appears at the top of the list.

  6. Click Save chart.

The X axis shows Jan–Dec, and each year appears as its own series in its own colour. Use the Series list in the left panel to reorder the years.

Choose how the years are shown

  • Bar chart: Set Bar grouping to Clustered to place each year side by side for easy comparison. Stacked and 100% are also available.

  • Line chart: Year-over-year line charts show as a Lollipop chart, with one marker per year for each month.

Good to know

  • Year is only available when the X axis is a date field and Bin by is set to Month.

  • Changing Bin by to Day, Week, Quarter, or Year, or switching to a non-date X axis, removes the Year breakout.

  • A year only appears if the date range includes data from that year.
