Use Buzz with Google Drive and Docs

Connect Google Drive so Buzz can search files, read Docs, create folders, and move files.

Written by Ellen Kajca

Let Buzz work in Google Drive

After you connect Google Drive in Apps, Buzz can search your Drive, read Google Docs and Word files, create folders, and move files. This is separate from attaching a Drive file to an action or chat.

Connect Google Drive

  1. Open Apps from the left sidebar.

  2. Turn on Google Drive.

  3. Sign in with Google and allow Hive to access Drive.

Connecting Gmail or Google Calendar is not enough. Buzz’s Drive tools appear only after you complete the Google Drive connect flow.

What Buzz can do

Ask Buzz to

What happens

Search Drive

Find files by name or indexed text. Narrow to Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, or folders; a specific folder; a date range; or files shared with you. Search returns titles and links, not the file body.

Read a file

Read a Google Doc as text, extract text from a .docx, or read a plain-text file. PDFs, images, Sheets, and Slides do not return file text.

Create a folder

Find a folder by name under a parent folder, or create it if it is missing. If the folder already exists, Buzz reuses it.

Move a file

Move a file into another folder. The file keeps its id and history. Buzz does not delete files.

While Buzz works, you may see status lines such as Searching Google Drive…, Reading Google Drive file…, Setting up Google Drive folder…, or Moving Google Drive file…

Ask Buzz in chat

Open Buzz and describe the Drive work in plain language. Examples:

  • “Find Google Docs about Q3 brand guidelines and summarize the latest one.”

  • “Search Drive for PDFs shared with me this month about the Acme contract.”

  • “What’s in the Project kickoff Google Doc?”

  • “Create a folder named Client deliverables under our Agency folder, then move last week’s proposal into it.”

Use Drive in a workflow

  1. Open the Workflows app and create or edit a workflow.

  2. Add a Then operation: Give Buzz a job.

  3. Choose Custom job and write a prompt that asks Buzz to search Drive, read a Doc, create a folder, or move a file.

  4. Save and enable the workflow.

Unattended workflow runs use the workflow creator’s connected Google Drive account. The creator must have Google Drive connected in Apps, or Buzz cannot use these tools.

Example: Trigger: Form is submitted. Then: Give Buzz a job (custom) — search Drive for the matching brief, create a client folder if it is missing, move the brief there, and summarize the Doc.

Use Drive in a snippet

Ask Buzz to create a Buzz snippet when the same Drive steps should run the same way every time — for example, find a named folder, create it if needed, and move a file. You can run that snippet from chat, from Tools → Buzz snippets, or from a workflow’s Run a snippet operation. See Using Buzz Snippets.

Availability and limitations

  • Buzz’s Drive tools appear only when Google Drive is connected in Apps for the person whose session is running. In chat, that is you. In a workflow, that is the workflow creator.

  • Buzz can create folders and move files. It cannot create a new Google Doc, edit Doc content, or delete files.

  • Buzz can read text from native Google Docs, .docx files, and plain-text files. It cannot extract text from PDFs, images, Sheets, or Slides. Search can still find those files by name or indexed text.

  • Moving a file changes its folder only. The file keeps its id, link, and history.

  • Buzz can work with files the connected Google account can access, including Shared drives that account can see.
