Projects can set a default bill rate and cost rate that apply to everyone on that project and all of its sub-projects. Sub-projects added later inherit the same defaults automatically.
This is different from workspace member default rates. Member defaults apply when someone joins the workspace. Project defaults apply when time is logged against a specific project.
When to use project defaults
Use project defaults when a project (or a whole project tree) should bill or cost at the same rates for most people — without updating each person’s profile.
Examples:
A client project uses one bill rate for everyone assigned to it.
A parent project sets defaults that should flow to every nested sub-project.
Set default project rates
Open the project’s Overview (Project Homepage).
Find the Project bill rates card.
Select Set project rates (next to View in Resourcing, when Resourcing is available).
In Set default project rates, enter a Bill rate, a Cost rate, or both. Leave a field empty or clear it to remove that project default.
Select Save.
You can also open Set project rates from the Bill Rates widget on a Dashboard, for each project shown in that widget.
If a parent project already has a default, that value can appear as a placeholder when the current project has no rate of its own. Saving a value on the current project sets its own default.
Apply rates to historical time (optional)
When you save project defaults, you can optionally rewrite rates on time already logged:
In Set default project rates, open Apply to historical time entries (optional).
Choose a date range (end dates cannot be in the future).
Enter at least one rate to apply, then select Save.
Hive rewrites logged time on the project and its sub-projects for that range. People, roles, and sub-projects that already have their own custom rate keep that rate.
Which rate Hive uses
For each rate field (bill or cost), Hive picks the first match in this order:
The person’s custom rate on that project
A project role rate
The project’s default rate (or the nearest parent project that has one)
The person’s workspace default rate
On the Project bill rates card, the Default cost / bill rate columns show the project default when one applies.
Changes are recorded in the project’s bill rate history.
How sub-projects inherit
Defaults live only on the project that sets them. Hive resolves rates by walking up parent projects, so:
New or re-parented sub-projects inherit without copying rates onto each child.
A sub-project can set its own defaults to override the parent for itself and its children.

Saving workspace member defaults does not replace project defaults. Saving project defaults does not change each person’s workspace profile rates.
