Use split view in the Hive desktop app

Show two Hive tabs side by side in one desktop window.

Written by Ellen Kajca

Split view shows two Hive tabs side by side in one desktop window. For example, keep a Table view open on the left and your Inbox or a project on the right. Split view is in the Hive desktop app for macOS and Windows, version 3.2.31 or later. It is not in a web browser.

Open split view

  • Right-click a tab that is not the current tab and select Open in Split View. Your current tab goes on the left. The tab you clicked goes on the right.

  • Right-click the current tab and select Split with New Tab. A new tab opens on the right. Go to any page there.

  • Or select View → Split with New Tab (Cmd+\ on Mac, Ctrl+\ on Windows).

  • On Windows, open the menu with the ☰ button in the tab bar.

The two tabs show as one group in the tab bar. Click either tab of the group to show the split again.

Work in split view

  • Click in a side to make it active. The active side has a thin outline. Reload, Find, Zoom and Back/Forward act on the active side only.

  • Links you open in a side stay in that side.

  • Drag the divider between the sides to change their widths. Double-click the divider to go back to equal widths.

  • To resize with the keyboard, select View → Resize Split View (Cmd+Option+\ on Mac, Ctrl+Alt+\ on Windows). Use the Left and Right arrow keys, then press Enter to reset or Esc to finish.

  • The right side keeps the sidebar minified and chat closed, so the page has more room. Click a chat in the sidebar to open it on the right side. This does not change your sidebar or chat settings in other tabs.

  • Click a tab outside the group to show it at full width. The split stays saved and comes back when you click either tab of the group.

Close split view

  • Right-click either tab of the group and select Close Split View, or select View → Close Split View (Cmd+Shift+\ on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+\ on Windows). The active side stays open at full width.

  • Or close one of the two tabs. The other tab fills the window.

Notes

  • Each side needs at least 480px. If the window is too narrow for two sides, Open in Split View and Split with New Tab are greyed out in the tab menu, and View → Split with New Tab does nothing. If an open split gets too narrow, only the active side shows. The split comes back when you make the window wider.

  • If you drag one tab of the group to another window, the split ends.

  • After you restart the app, your tabs come back as normal tabs, not as a split.

  • You can have one split per window.

  • Don't see split view? Update the desktop app: in the app menu (the Hive menu on Mac), select Check For Updates, then Restart to Update. If your company manages Hive updates, ask your IT team.
