You can bring existing work into Hive from a spreadsheet or from another tool.
Open your photo or initials in the top right and choose Import tasks. External and restricted members do not see this menu item.
Choose a source
Spreadsheet — CSV, XLS, or XLSX. This opens the spreadsheet importer.
Asana — JSON export. In Asana, open the project menu, choose Export, then JSON.
Trello — JSON export. In Trello, open the board menu, choose More, then Print and Export, then Export JSON. You also choose who can access the imported project. If your workspace limits who can create labels and the board needs new ones, the import stops for non-admins. Ask a workspace admin to import the board, or to allow label creation for a short time.
Smartsheet — XLSX. In Smartsheet, open Sheet Actions, choose Export, then Export to Excel.
Microsoft Project — MPP or XML. You can place the plan under a parent project, or leave it at the workspace root.
Monday.com — connect with an API token, load your boards, and choose which boards to import. This is not a file upload.
Basecamp — connect your Basecamp 3 account and choose which accounts to import. This is not a file upload.
Attach a file
For Asana, Trello, Smartsheet, and Microsoft Project, attach the export, then click Import.
Asana, Trello, Smartsheet, and Microsoft Project can take more than one file. A spreadsheet takes one file.
The button is Choose file or Choose files.
Spreadsheet columns
Map your columns in the importer. Hive recognizes Title, Description, Assignee, Start Date, End Date, Status, Section, Phase, Milestone, Estimated Hours, Actual Hours, WBS, and Predecessors.
You can also choose Import to existing project.
A column header that does not match one of those fields can be mapped as a custom field.
On Match Columns, open Will become for that column and choose Custom field. Hive matches the column to a custom field with the same name.
For example, a Location column maps to a custom field named Location.
If that custom field already exists, the values go into it. If it does not, Hive creates a text custom field with that name.
Spreadsheet importer
Choosing Spreadsheet opens a four-step importer: Upload file, Select header row, Match Columns, and Validate data.
1. Upload file
The screen shows the columns Hive expects, and a link labeled Click here to see an example CSV. You can rename or remove columns in the later steps. Click Select file and choose a .xlsx, .xls, or .csv file.
To add the rows to a project you already have, check Import to existing project? and choose the project. Leave it unchecked to create a new project.
2. Select header row
Pick the row that contains your column names.
3. Match Columns
Your table is the file you uploaded. Will become is the Hive field each column maps to. Use the X on a column to drop it. Unmapped columns become custom fields.
Choose Custom field in Will become to match the column to a custom field with the same name. If none exists, Hive creates a text custom field with that name.
4. Validate data
Dates must match the date format in your profile settings.
Assignees are email addresses. Separate more than one with a comma.
Estimated Hours and Actual Hours are numbers.
WBS is numbers joined by dots, such as 1.2.3, and each value must be unique.
Where the work lands
Asana: each project in the JSON becomes a Hive project. The name keeps an [Asana] suffix. If a custom field in the file has the same name and type as one in your workspace, Hive reuses that field and does not make a duplicate.
Trello: each board becomes one project. Open lists become statuses, and cards become actions.
Monday.com: each selected board becomes one project.
Smartsheet: a flat sheet becomes one project. Grouped rows can become separate projects.
Spreadsheet: a new project, or a project you already have.
Microsoft Project: the plan imports under the parent you chose, or at the workspace root.
