Signed in but can't get into your team's workspace

What each sign-in screen means when Hive doesn't take you to your team's workspace, and how to fix it.

Written by Ellen Kajca

If you sign in to Hive and see a setup or "request access" screen instead of your team's workspace, Hive usually doesn't recognize your account as a member of that workspace yet. The most common cause is that the email you signed in with is different from the email your admin invited.

Start here: check which email you signed in with

When you choose Continue with Office 365 account or Continue with Google work account, Hive uses the email address Microsoft or Google gives us. If that address is even slightly different from the one your admin invited, Hive treats it as a new, separate account that isn't in your team's workspace. Common differences:

Ask your admin which email address they invited, and compare it with the one you sign in with. If they differ, see Fix it as an admin below.

What each screen means

"Your team is already on Hive"

You're signed in, but your account isn't a member of any workspace. Hive found a workspace connected to your email domain and shows its name under the heading.

  • Check that the workspace name shown is your team's workspace. If it isn't, don't select Request access. The request goes to the admins of the workspace shown, not to your team.

  • If it is your team's workspace, select Request access. Its admins are notified in Hive and can approve you. Once approved, you're added to the workspace and can sign in normally.

  • Don't select Create new workspace unless you want to start a separate workspace.

"Find your workspace"

You're signed in, but your account isn't a member of any workspace and Hive couldn't find one to suggest. Ask your admin to invite the exact email address you signed in with.

"You already have a Hive account"

The email you entered already belongs to another Hive account. Don't try to create a new one.

  • Select Sign in to your account to sign in with that email's password.

  • If you see Continue, that account doesn't have a password yet. Hive emails you a link to set one.

  • If your company uses single sign-on (SSO), select Sign in with SSO.

You often see this screen when you signed in once with Microsoft or Google under one email and later opened an invite sent to a different email. Ask your admin to check which address they invited.

This is expected the first time you sign in with Microsoft or Google to an account that was created another way, for example from an invite. Hive emails a six-digit code to confirm the account is yours.

  1. Open the email and copy the code. It expires after 15 minutes.

  2. Enter it in the same browser where you started signing in, and select Continue.

For more help with codes, see Verify your email address in Hive.

"Welcome to Hive – Let's set up your workspace"

Hive is treating you as a brand-new user. If you expected to join an existing team, stop here and don't create a workspace. Select Log in and sign in with the email your admin invited, or ask your admin to invite the email you're using.

Fix it as an admin

Invite the exact sign-in email

  1. Ask the person for the exact email address they see after signing in with Microsoft or Google.

  2. Open Manage users and invite that exact address. If a Hive account already exists for it, that account is added to your workspace right away.

  3. If you previously invited a different address for the same person, remove that invite so they don't end up with two accounts.

See Adding people into your workspace for invite steps.

Approve access requests

When someone selects Request access, workspace admins get a Workspace access request notification in Hive. Select it, or open Manage users and go to the Pending approval tab, then select Approve or Deny. Approved people are added to the workspace right away. People you deny aren't notified.

Still stuck?

Contact Hive Support and include:

  • The exact email address you sign in with

  • The email address your admin invited

  • How you sign in (Microsoft, Google, SSO, or email and password)

  • A screenshot of the screen you see
