Review a Word document in Hive

Open a .docx on any action card with Review in Hive to edit, comment, save versions, and request approval — separate from Proofing & Approvals.

Written by Ellen Kajca

Use Review in Hive to open a Word (.docx) file that is stored on an action card, edit it in Hive, leave comments, save versions, and request approval on a saved version.

This is not Proofing & Approvals, and it is not AI Proofing. Proofing is for markup and sign-off on a proof file. Review in Hive edits the Word document itself.

Open Review in Hive

  1. Open an action card.

  2. Attach a .docx file stored in Hive (not a link to a file that only lives in Google Drive or another external store).

  3. On the file, open the menu (⋯) and select Review in Hive.

After the document is linked, you can also open it from Review in Hive in the Approvals area on the card.

Each card has one Word document for this flow. If the card has more than one .docx, Review in Hive opens the document already linked to that card.

Work in the Word Review editor

The Word Review window opens over the card.

You can:

  • Edit the document with the formatting toolbar

  • Add comments and tracked changes

  • Save a version when the document is ready for review

  • Open History to see saved versions

  • Use Original Word to work with the source file

  • Import a Word revision when someone edited the file outside Hive

Add a comment

Select text in the document and add a comment.

Posted comments stay beside the highlighted text.

Closing the Word Review window saves first. Use the window’s own close control.

Request approval on a saved version

Approvals in Word Review apply to the saved Word version, not to a proof upload. The Approvals sidebar sits on the right of the Word Review window.

  1. Save a version when the document is ready.

  2. In the Approvals sidebar, add stages and approvers as needed.

  3. Resolve tracked changes before approving.

  4. Select Request approval.

Later edits after approval need another review of a newer saved version.

How this differs from Proofing

  • Review in Hive — edit and approve the Word file on the card

  • Proofing & Approvals — upload a proof (PDF, image, Office file, and more) for markup and approval rounds

  • AI Proofing — Buzz suggests edits on a proof; it does not replace Review in Hive

Also available on Copy and Proposal cards

The same Word Review editor is used on Copy cards and CRM Proposal documents. On those cards you may open the document from the card’s document workflow instead of from an attachment menu.

For creating an Asset with a linked Copy document, see Create an Asset with a linked Copy document.
